The workshop discussed the importance of the problem of the tailings danger in Ukraine and the world, the state of the Ukrainian legislation in this field, the need to raise awareness of professionals, the public and the political elite in the issue of man-made hazards associated with these objects.
German colleagues have praised the work of the Ukrainian team, as in the already completed project on this subject, and preparatory work undertaken in the preparation of curriculum and training to improve the level of knowledge among students and teachers of tailings security.
NMU leadership expressed willingness to coordinate and support the initiative team of experts.

The objective of the project includes
- raising the knowledge in the TMF safety based on the TMF Methodology as an advanced approach to improving safety of hazardous mining sites among Ukrainian students in environmental and mining sciences and young university teachers dealing with education on environmental protection;

improving the TMF safety level by addressing this
issue on the legislative level in terms of how Ukraine fulfils its obligations
under the Association Agreement.
The long-term goals of the project are
1. Ensure the sustainability of the TMF Methodology as the modern organisational and managerial toolkit to improve the safety of TMF sites through the use of the comprehensive educational module that provides an opportunity to get full and consecutive information including the introduction to the theme, importance, scopes, operation problems of the TMFs as a high-risk facilities, and application of the TMF Methodology in practice. It is suggested to introduce the education course developed within the project to teaching/learning process in the participating universities on an annual basis. Furthermore, the education course approved by Federal Environment Agency of Germany and international experts will be recommended for inclusion in relevant educational programs to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
2. Put the UNECE TMF Guidelines requirements into action in the form of a summary of good practice for TMFs, which will promote the implementation of Action plan under Directive 2006/21/EC adapting the Ukrainian legislation to the European law.
