The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine and the Ministry of Communities and Territories of Ukraine supportedbyf the European Union project "Water Initiative of the European Union Plus for the Eastern Partnership" (EUWI+) organized the meeting.
Representatives of national and local authorities, water
associations and international experts from EU Member States shared the
practical experience gained in the implementation of water reforms.
During the panel discussion “Synergy with other international projects
implemented in Ukraine” Hanna Lenko, OSCE consultant, Ecoplatform expert, presented
the report on research of TSFs and their impact on water bodies. She told about
the TSFs inventory in the Dniester river basin and Donbass TSFs research.
TSFs are intended for safe industrial waste storage, but in case of
emergencies they become sources of water bodies contamination and sources of
impact by contaminated territories due to one-off emissions in case of
accidents and / or chronic leakage due to structural defects. In this case, the
hazardous substances contained in the waste get directly or from contaminated
territories into the nearest surface and groundwater, depending on the facility
specifics.
The TSFs inventory in the Dniester river basin is performed under the GEF/ UNDP/ OSCE/ UNECE project "Enabling Transboundary Cooperation and Integrated Water Resources Management in the Dniester River Basin".
Donbass TSFs research is implemented under the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine project "Assistance in the Donbas environmental monitoring system expansion".
